The Chorus

The Douglas County Children’s Chorus was founded in 1993 by Kurt Stroman. It was his vision to provide Douglas County children the opportunity for professionally led choral training richer and more challenging than what might be available in a school music program. The growth of the organization confirms the validity of that vision. The consistent growth of young families in Douglas County, coupled with the valid scheduling conflicts with which school students are faced in choosing between music and other important electives, creates a strong demand for the type of experience and training the Douglas County Children’s Chorus offers.

The Chorus consists of two groups: the Children’s Chorus (grades 5 through 9, auditioned) and the Cherubs Chorus (grades K-4, open). Each group rehearses weekly under the direction of a professional music educator with the assistance of an accompanist. The organization performs an active schedule of concerts in Douglas County and Denver.Optional summer tours, both national and abroad deepen the multicultural experience of Chorus membership.

| The Douglas County Children’s Chorus provides its members a stimulating and rewarding combination of musical training and cultural enrichment.Rehearsals are organized to teach aspects of vocal training, solfege, sight reading, ear training, and musical appreciation through the repertoire.Repertoire is chosen for its historical and cultural aspects as well as for its musical value.Children learn and perform songs from around the world in their original languages; the Chorus has performed works in Finnish, Spanish, Latin, French, Swahili, German, Turkish, Hebrew, Japanese, and Russian. The conductor explains each song’s cultural background in order to acquaint the singers with other heritages and cultures. In a largely homogeneous suburban community, the Chorus offers an exposure to diversity that many children might not receive in their school and community activities. As for physical accessibility, all performing and rehearsing locations are places of public accommodation and are fully accessible to those with disabilities.Membership in the Chorus is open to all children who successfully complete the required audition, regardless of disability.
